"When someone tells me it can't be done, I ease back into my chair
and smile, because I know my next adventure is about to begin"

Biography

Steve Smith specializes in developing novel x-ray imaging systems for medicine, security, and industrial applications. His largest project has been the invention and commercialization of the SECURE 1000, a security system for detecting weapons, explosives, and drugs hidden under the clothing of criminals and terrorists. The SECURE 1000 required five years and more than one-million dollars to bring to market. At least four companies had previously attempted, and failed, to develop and commercialize this type of system. Critics of the technology said it couldn't be done! Even if the technical issues were resolved, they claimed the system would be too difficult to use, regulatory agencies would never grant approval, and the public would panic at the thought of being exposed to x-rays. Nothing says "success" like a stack of purchase orders; about two dozen SECURE 1000s are currently being used in the United States and other countries.

In the medical field, Dr. Smith has developed x-ray systems for detecting blocked arteries in the heart (arteriosclerosis), and the loss of calcium in the bones (osteoporosis). His work in nondestructive testing has led to products for inspecting cans and bottles for fill level and leaks, and printed circuit boards for defective solder connections.

Dr. Smith is the author of the textbook: "The Scientist and Engineer's Guide to Digital Signal Processing." Unlike most of the DSP literature, this book provides clear explanations of practical DSP techniques without getting lost in detailed math and theory.

At present, Dr. Smith is president and technical director of Spectrum San Diego, Inc., a research and development group specializing in x-ray imaging and other instrumentation systems. He lives in San Diego with his wife, Jenny.
