The IL2000 folds an optical path length of approximately three feet into a ten inch cube. Its compact size is complemented by internally balanced components for operation in any orientation. The housing is gas-tight, with O-ring seals and nitrogen purge ports to provide an optically pure environment.
The system can operate on either AC or DC battery power. For connection to a computer, the IL2000 features both a standard serial port and a built-in modem that will wake the system up from low-power "sleep" mode when it receives a call. The IL2000 is equally at home in a metrology lab or in the field - it will even work on top of a telephone pole!
Each time the IL2000 is turned on, it automatically recalibrates to an internal optical wavelength standard. This compensates for any mechanical change in the wavelength drive system caused by temperature or physical orientation. The IL2000 will even operate on any one of its six sides - even upside down! The ability to self-calibrate adds stability and reliability to the IL2000 platform.
SpectroCube analysis software provides an intuitive graphical user interface to the system. Based on the popular LabVIEW® virtual instrumentation platform, users can run the included executable program or customize the program using LabVIEW® software. [LabVIEW® is a trademark of National Instrument Corporation]
Users may also communicate with the IL2000 using Hyperterminal or any simple telecommunications program. The IL2000 recognizes over 40 commands, allowing the user to initialize system parameters, perform scans or control individual elements of the system from a handheld terminal or remote system.
Proprietary double-pass monochromator technology (patent pending) provides inherently better wavelength tracking than a double monochromator. The first-pass dispersion is optically chopped, then returned to the same grating for a second spectral dispersion. This chopped signal is then synchronously measured with a lock-in current amplifier, providing a million to one scatter figure from 250 to 1100 nm with 2 nm bandwidth and 0.2 nm resolution.
The NIST traceable calibration is stored directly in hardware, allowing the IL2000 to output absolute data without external software manipulation. Multiple calibration profiles are stored in memory for alternate system configurations.
The IL2000 can measure light levels ranging from moonlight to full sunlight, an eight decade dynamic range, by combining a high gain preamp, floating current-to-current amplifier, and synchronous detection technology. This wide dynamic range, combined with a very low scatter figure, allows the IL2000 to measure low level components of broad composite sources - like the amount of UVB in sunlight.
The detector and input optics are removable,
allowing easy reconfiguration of the system by adding
interchangeable components. A solar-blind high gain detector can
be used for specialized UV applications, or the detector
can be replaced with a lamp accessory to create a
monochromatic light source. Interchangeable input optics are
available for cosine spatial response, optical power and
radiance measurements. An external chopper sync output
allows the ability to pulse a distant light source, thus
creating a lock-in spectrophotometer that can measure
transmission through a nearly infinite sample path.
