Hashimoto's lymphocytic thyroiditis (HLT) is a chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. The inflammation in the gland changes the structure of the thyroid tissue. These changes are diffuse, affecting the entire gland, and can be detected by sonographic imaging.

You see longitudinal cross-sections of the gland. Skin is the topmost white layer in the images. Dotted red line showns a rough delineation of the thyroid gland. Note the large variability of images in Hashimoto's thyroiditis patients.
