Compactness as a tool in applied maths

Abstract: 

The notion of (topological) compactness finds a distinguished place in
modern mathematics but plays also an important role in applications
including those involving engineering. The talk will discuss the
features of compactness and "near-compactness" that could be of certain
use in image processing. In particular, the compactness of families
of fuctions when viewed as the compactness of subsets in a specific
metric space will be dealt with.
