Intrinsic Curves on Triangulated Surfaces

The head of ceramic elephant (smooth surface) is scanned by a range finder. The four connected mesh is result of the scanning.

 

The surface is approximate by an osculating paraboloids and differential parameters are computed. Mean curvature H is used to extract curves.

where  and  are main curvatures.

The zero crossing curves of main curvature are chosen in this case.

 

The curves can be used for registering range images taken from unrelated views.
