Zdenek Kalal, a former MSc. student at CMP has recently completed his
PhD at the University of Surrey under the supervision of Krystian
Mikolajczyk and Jiri Matas. His
work on TLD tracking was awarded the
ICT Pioneers Prize in the "Technology Everywhere"
category. The
UK ICT Pioneers competition, organised by EPSRC aims to recognise the most
exceptional UK PhD students in ICT-related topics (including computer
science, electronics, communications and photonics) who can innovatively
demonstrate the exploitation potential of their research.
The prize has
been covered on the internet, e.g. here.
The related article in the well-known internet magazine Engadget has hundreds of
comments, very funny to read! A non-negligible number of readers think
Zdenek will be a millionaire ... On YouTube, the video has been seen
about 120 000 times, 1250 like it, 5 don't.

Vladimir Smutny, Pavel Krsek and Pavel Píša (from the
Department of Control Engineering)
developed, in collaboration
with Neovision s.r.o.,
a mobile robot
for air duct cleaning by dry ice blasting. The project received
third place
in the
Cooperation of the year 2010 competition organized by the
American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham)
and the
Association for Foreign Investment (AFI)
The robot was also awarded a special prize by
the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic.
The robot, which has already been put into operation, allows effective
and ecological cleaning of industrial vents and air condition conduits
including the motion of robot in bends and moving in horizontal,
inclined, and vertical ducts. The robot was presented in the Milenium program of the Czech TV on October 29, 2010.
