GS Workshop on Computer Vision and Perception
Prague, Wednesday June 27 - Friday 29, 2012

(An event to commemorate Gerald Sommer's achievements)

About the GS Workshop

(From Vasek Hlavac, the GS Workshop organizing committee chair)

Prof. Gerald Sommer has been an important contributor to image analysis and computer vision since he started his scientific career as a physics student at the University of Jena. After finishing his PhD in physics, he entered the medical image analysis domain. He has been one of the few East Germans in the image analysis area who established himself and his group professionally at the academic scene of the unified Germany. Gerald also educated a substantial number of successful researchers and professionals. Gerald helped and advised many people. I had a privilege to be among them.

Gerald Sommer has retired from his professor chair at the Christian-Albrecht's University in Kiel in April 2011. I met with two of his collaborators, professors Reinhard Klette and Bodo Rosenhahn, at a Dagstuhl workshop in June 2011. The idea sprung in our discussion that we should organize a workshop to commemorate Gerald Sommer's professional achievements. We told Gerald about our desire to organize the workshop together with the team from the Center for Machine Perception in Prague. Gerald agreed.

We aim at a small workshop with an intimate atmosphere covering computer vision, pattern recognition and perception issues from a wider perspective. The participation at the workshop is on invitation only. The workshop talks will be given by invited speakers. The slight preference is to a wider perspective scientific talk which will stimulate a vivid discussion. The invited participants have a choice to give either a 30 minutes long talk or an 8 minutes long flash presentation or not to give a talk and participate in discussions.

The workshop will be held at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Campus Karlovo namesti at the Center for Machine Perception to keep the costs low.

The workshop will be organized by the Czech Pattern Recognition Society, member of the International Association for Pattern Recognition on a self-financing principle and a non-profit basis. The workshop costs will be covered by the registration fee.

Invited participants are welcome to come with their accompanying persons. The accompanying persons will pay only a reduced registration fee. An evening social event will be organized for invited participants and their accompanying persons. It is likely to be a classic music concert and a dinner.
