The impact of this intervention is limited because sexual transmission of HSV commonly results from sexual contact during periods of asymptomatic viral shedding. The key to infected parents having a healthy baby is twofold: First, women and their partners need to know the herpes status of everyone involved. This causes a large proportion of global burden of ill-health because in the end only a small proportion of people may look for advice and avoid re-infection.
