Robots underpinning future NATO operations

Task Group SAS-RTG-097

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: NATO Research and Technology Organization uses many abbreviations. Could they be explained?
A1: in alphabetical order:

Q2: Am I eligible or is my employer eligible to participate in the Task Group activities?
A2: Yes, if you or your employer belongs to the rather wide list of NATO Partner Nations. See NATO's Partner Policy Guidance from October 2011. In addition, you need the NATO approval. See Q/A4 for details.

Q3: Am I allowed to participate if I or my employer do not belong to the NATO Partner Nations?
A3: Unfortunately not. You are welcome to use the unclassified information which is provided publically by the Task Group, e.g., on these web pages.

Q4: How can I register myself, get NATO approval and start participating in Task Group SAS-RTG-097 activities?
A4: Participants MUST register for the event via a link on the STO website www.sto.nato.int (Activities -> Upcoming Events: scroll down and select “Robotics Underpinning Future NATO Operations” SAS-097).  When submitting the enrolment a copy is sent to the National coordinator who validates the enrolment. If you intend to participate, please also inform the SAS-RTG-097 secretary Dr. Michal Reinstein by email.

Q5: Can the defense research be financed from public money at the European Commission level?
A5: The Treaty of Rome from 1957 does not allow it. V. Hlavac consulted this issue with the Dr. Khalil Rouhana (European Commission, Director, Directorate E: Digital Content & Cognitive Systems) in October 2010. Dr. Rouhana expressed interest in the dual use of military technologies. He encourages the participation of the EC funded research project researchers in SAS-RTG-097 activities. He sees the potential in important stimuli for the civilian use of involved robotics technologies, e.g. in the disaster management.
